Lord Smedley (played by Nigel Planer) is an extremely annoying friend of George and one half of the Scarlet Pimpernel, the other half being his friend Lord Topper.
When Blackadder and Baldrick were in prison, he was disguised as torturer/executioner Madame Guillotine in order to rescue them. Blackadder, planning his own escape, poisoned her with a suicide pill, so when he revealed that he actually came to rescue them, it was too late.
